Communities help pay for ecosystem services provided by forests

In 1996 and 2002, major forest fires scorched the Upper South Platte  River watershed. In the aftermath, heavy rains washed debris, burned logs and more than 750,000 cubic yards of sediment into the reservoir, which supplies over 7,000 acre-feet of drinking water annually to Denver.

Forest Ranger Hat for a Tree Farmer

At a ceremony here on Monday, Chuck Leavell, a keyboardist for the Rolling Stones and the Allman Brothers Band and also a Georgia tree farmer, accepted the ranger hat. “This means every bit as much to me as that Grammy did a couple of weeks ago,” he said in an interview before taking the stage with Smokey and Tom Tidwell, chief of the Forest Service.

Deterioration of fire-killed trees in the Rocky Mountain Region

Following the unprecedented 2002 fire season in the Rocky Mountain Region (Anonymous 2003), there was demand from Forest Service and timber industry representatives for information on the rate and type of deterioration of fire-killed trees. Most of this interest was related to marketability and salvage of timber, but there was also interest in the hazard of trees in developed areas as well as the ecological processes of decay and deterioration of the coarse woody debris.

More On-The-Ground Tools for Tree Farmers at Risk

The U.S. Forest Service Forest Stewardship Program, which provides resources to every state forestry agency to support a network of trusted and reliable service foresters, might not be there in the future. The President’s budget proposes to reduce the program by almost 14 percent. The American Tree Farm System, in partnership with the National Association of State Foresters, is working to keep these foresters around by supporting the program that keeps them in business but we, and your foresters, need your help. Say Thank You to your forester today by signing this letter in support of the Forest Stewardship Program. We are hoping to gather 500 signatures by March 14, when 50 Tree Farmers from across the country will deliver this letter to decision-makers in-person.  So please spread the word and share this effort with your fellow forest owners who also see the incredible value that foresters provide.
